Everglades

Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP)
CERP is a framework and guide to restore, protect, and preserve the water resources of central and southern Florida.

Everglades National Park
Everglades National Park is the largest remaining sub-tropical wilderness in the continental United States and has extensive fresh and saltwater areas, open Everglades prairies, and mangrove forests. Abundant wildlife includes rare and colorful birds, and this is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side. The park is 1,506,539 acres (606,688 hectares) in size. It is a World Heritage Site, an International Biosphere Reserve, and a Wetland of International Importance.

DEP: Everglades Restoration

The Everglades Ecosystem extends from the Chain of Lakes south of Orlando to the reefs surrounding Fort Jefferson southwest of the Florida Keys. The natural system has been severely degraded by flood control and water distribution systems, growth and development, and agriculture. High levels of phosphorus, mercury, and other contaminants have occurred in the water system from urban stormwater and agricultural runoff. Restoring both the natural and built environments to a healthy and sustainable ecosystem is an enormous task. This effort will require long-term funding commitments and decades to complete. Presently, participation in the restoration includes federal and state agencies, two American Indian tribes, counties and municipal governments, industry, commercial and private sectors, and special interest groups .Successful restoration efforts will require coordination of activities among all these groups. Goals of the restoration effort include restoring the natural hydrology, enhancement and recovery of native habitats and species, and revitalizing urban core areas.

Friends of the Everglades
A non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the Everglades.  Friends strives to protect and restore the Greater Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades Ecosystem.  Our primary tools are legal advocacy and education.

South Florida Water Management District: The Everglades Reports summarize available data and findings from research and monitoring of the Everglades Protection Area, and will be used by the South Florida Water Management District and Florida Department of Environmental Protection for making decisions affecting implementation of the Everglades Construction Project and related activities.
