Loxahatchee
Greenways Project
Project Partners
In 1991, 1000 Friends of Florida and
The Conservation Fund established the Florida Greenways Program
to help conserve greenways throughout the state. The program was
involved with greenway planning initiatives at the state, regional
and local levels. From 1993 to 1995, staff worked with the 40-member
Florida Greenways Commission created by Governor Lawton Chiles to
plan and support a statewide system of greenways linking natural
areas and open spaces. The Commission completed its report to the
governor in late 1995, leading to the establishment of the Florida
Greenways Coordinating Council, an agency created through legislation
and housed in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Regional and local greenway projects
1000 Friends of Florida and The Conservation Fund are working with
four regional greenway planning projects. They are the Suncoast
River-based Greenways Project in the Tampa area, the Apalachee Greenways
Project in north Florida and south Georgia, the Broward County Urban
River Greenways Project, and the subject of this report, the Loxahatchee
Greenways Project.
This report and the project it describes are cooperative efforts

1000 Friends of Florida
1000 Friends of Florida is a statewide growth management advocacy
group founded in 1986 by Nathaniel Reed and other concerned Floridians.
The group's mandate is to monitor implementation of the state's
landmark growth management legislation, which requires every local
government to prepare a comprehensive plan detailing how and where
growth will occur. In cooperation with The Conservation Fund, 1000
Friends initiated and administered the Florida Greenways Program,
which laid the foundation for a statewide system of greenways. Contact

irreplaceable outdoor heritage on a scale that far exceeds its size
10 years, 1 million acres saved. The Conservation Fund's
American Greenways program provides land planning services, essential
information and strategic support to assist public agencies, private
