Affordable Housing

Believing that housing that is affordable -- as well as close to workplaces, schools, and shopping -- is a key element of a sustainable community, 1000 Friends launched its affordable housing program in 1991.  1000 Friends was instrumental in establishing the Sadowski Act Coalition, which secured passage of the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Act of 1992, creating the nation’s largest dedicated funding source for affordable housing. 1000 Friends reconvenes the Sadowski Coalition each year to advocate for continued funding.  1000 Friends also provides education, training, and technical assistance to local governments and nonprofits, and works to shape public policy at the state and national levels, focusing special attention on preventing NIMBYism, promoting inclusionary housing, and supporting community land trusts.
