Major Victory for Smart Growth Advocates:
Scripps Relocated to Abacoa/Briger Site!

In the fall of 2003, Palm Beach County and the State of Florida committed over $500 million to bring a branch of the respected Scripps Research Institute to Palm Beach County. The first site selected--the 2000-acre Mecca Farms--was located in an extremely remote, rural area in the Loxahatchee River's headwaters, surrounded by environmentally sensitive lands. From an environmental and growth management perspective, it appeared to be the worst possible location for intense development. 1000 Friends and others are led the charge to relocated the proposed Scripps facility from the remote Mecca site to a more appropriate location. After much contentious debate, on February 14, 2006, the Palm Beach County Commission voted to relocate Scripps to the Abacoa/Briger site favored by 1000 Friends and other smart growth advocates.
